I TRACE YOU CAROLYN ESKDALE. 200 GERTRUDE STREET : 7 - 29 FEBRUARY 1992
I TRACE YOU at 200 Gertrude Street consists of seven works refracted through memories of, and associations with banks of surfaces, textures and materials. The pieces are distilled from a practice of collecting scrap from derelict sites around Melbourne.
They address the displacement occurring between an ‘object’ and its ‘image’, oud our need to apprehend, to trace and catalogue in response to that displacement. They externalise a lack of registration and an expression of loss.
Concurrent with the 200 Gertrude Street exhibition is an installation at Temple Studio in Prahran, which presents in a different form a more conjectural approach to similar themes.
Individually, and together, the exhibitions speculate on the relationship between an object and its image. One may ask, does the image record and follow its object? Or alternatively, as with a tracing, is there a direct correspondence between the actual and the representation, which taken together represent the whole?
Sometimes meaning seems forced to recede into this shallow space between the concreteness of the material and the fraility of an illusion.
